Both my friend and I really enjoyed the cultural tour of Tana Toraja with our knowledgeable and experienced guide Rudi. Rudi has lots of stories to share about the Tana Torajan people.
What a fabulous tour, Toraja land is an absolutely must see for all travelers. After liaising with Hernan online I decided on a 3 night tour which gave me plenty of time to take in all that the region has to offer. I started in Medan and was picked up at my hotel by Mr Mingus my driver for the 4 days, his English is not brilliant but he was great fun, he pointed out everything I needed to see on the 9 hour drive to Toraja and was happy to stop at anytime for photos and toilet stops and introduced me to some great Indonesian snacks on our coffee and lunch breaks, he took really great care of me over the 4 days and is a real credit to Hernan and Indoglobal. On arriving in Toraja I was taken to my hotel, Pias Poppies, this is a small cozy establishment on the edge of town (Rantepao). The rooms are clean with great beds and hot showers but the heart of this hotel centers around the dining room were the guest congregate and exchange travel stories, it is really social and the food and staff are both excellent.
The following day I met my guide Martin and we headed straight for a traditional funeral, this turned out to be one of the greatest travel experiences of my life. Martin introduced me to the family and then I was free to wander around the ceremony. There were hundreds of people there, drumming, processions, dining and many many animal sacrifices, it was almost surreal, a true spectacle. I was there for almost 3 hours, it was amazing. After this we visited graves in rock faces, children’s graves in a tree and hanging graves in a cave, absolutely fascinating. The next day we took in the buffalo market, local market and the beautiful rice terraces, a fabulous tour.
Hernan (Indoglobal) was very easy to deal with, quickly answering my emails and many questions. Information and pricing is readily available on their website and there are no hidden costs or extras.
A fabulous experience with a very professional tour operator. Highly recommended!
